Kuali Membership

Kuali Membership is the means for any college, university, commercial, and other not-for-profit organization to get involved in sustaining and evolving the Kuali software and community.

Kuali began in 2004 as a cooperative effort among seven partners and an investment from the Mellon Foundation. It is now making the transition from funding based on members, partners, and foundations to a self-sustaining organization overseeing several projects and funded entirely by its membership.
Kuali membership dues will pay for staff and resources to perform necessary activities to oversee the Foundation itself and the projects that are a part of the Kuali community both now and in the future.

The software of Kuali projects is made available under the Educational Community License and is available to anyone for any use or modification without fee. Thus, use of the software is not in any way tied to joining Kuali. However, membership in the Kuali Foundation is an opportunity for organizations to influence the development and direction of the Kuali projects.  Kuali Members have influence on the future of the organization and its projects through voting rights to determine the board of directors and, when resources are also tendered to projects, to influence the Kuali project priorities.

Colleges and universities differ in their need for, and ability to, contribute to the Kuali community, and no pricing structure could perfectly account for all of these differences. The Kuali Membership dues structure recognizes these differences and, therefore, dues are based on annual budget (all sources) for single campus memberships. Members’ initial commitment will be for three years.

Annual Budget (all sources)…………… Annual Dues

Over $750M..................................................... $24,500
$500M-750M.................................................... $14,500
$250M-500M.................................................... $ 9,500
Less than $250M.............................................. $ 4,500
Foundations...................................................... $14,500
Corporations..................................................... $20,000

In addition, Members are also encouraged to tender appropriate staff members to the Kuali Foundation projects for specific periods of time. For example, a college or university might assign a staff member to work full time (or half time) under the direction of the Kuali Foundation Board, of under the direction of a specific project manager, to work on a specific project feature or need. These can include functional, technical, support, or administrative staff.  In community-based projects, doing work is a primary path to influence.
